File Manager
The File Manager allows you to browse, upload, edit, delete, and organize the files that make up your game server. This tool is built directly into the Survival Servers control panel and eliminates the need for an external FTP program, although FTP can still be used for large transfers.
At a Glance
When you open the File Manager, you will see two main areas:
A directory tree on the left, showing all folders and files in your server's root directory.
A main workspace on the right, displaying the contents of the selected folder and allowing you to perform file actions.
File Manager Controls
At the top of the File Manager window, several buttons allow you to manage your server files.
- Copy
- Copies the selected file or folder. After selecting a destination, you may paste the copied item.
- Refresh
- Reloads the File Manager to display the most recent state of your files. This is useful after uploading files via FTP.
- New Folder
- Creates a brand new folder within the current directory.
- New File
- Creates a blank file you can name and edit. Useful for configuration files.
- Trash
- Deletes the selected file or folder. Deleted items cannot be recovered, so use caution.
You can double click any folder on the left panel to open it. Sub-folders and files will appear after. To go back, click a up arrow higher in the directory tree.
The root directory ("/") will contain your game’s primary folders such as "Saved", "Config", "ShooterGame", "steamapps", or others depending on the game.
Uploading Files
To upload files through the File Manager:
- Navigate to the target folder where you want the file(s) stored.
- Drag and drop your files into the left-hand panel.
- Wait until the upload completes. Larger files may take longer depending on your connection.
Note: Some games require specific file formats (.ini, .cfg, .json, .pak, .mod). Make sure you upload files to the correct folders.
Downloading Files
To download files through the File Manager:
- Navigate to the target folder or file.
- For a folder right click and compress the folder.
- Click the zip folder and you should see a download button at the top right.
- For a file simply click the file and click the download button on the top right.
- Wait until the download is completes. Larger files may take longer depending on your connection.
Note: Some games require specific file formats (.ini, .cfg, .json, .pak, .mod). Make sure you upload files to the correct folders.
Editing Files
Many configuration files can be edited directly inside the File Manager.
- Click on the file you wish to edit.
- The file should open on the right-side panel.
- Make your changes and click Save.
- Restart your server for the changes to take effect.
Warning: Incorrect values may cause your server to fail startup. Always keep a backup of critical files before editing.
Creating New Files or Folders
- New File
- Creates a blank file. Name it (e.g., server.cfg, settings.ini, etc.) and then open it to edit.
- New Folder
- Creates a new directory inside the location you're currently browsing.
Deleting Files
To delete a file or folder, select it by right clicking and click delete.
Important: Deletions are immediate and irreversible. We strongly recommend downloading important files before deleting or replacing them.
Common Uses of the File Manager
The File Manager is useful for many tasks depending on the game you are hosting.
Uploading mods or plugins
Editing server configuration files
Replacing world or save files
Installing custom maps
Reviewing or deleting log files
Managing JSON, INI, CFG, and XML configs
Organizing custom assets (images, blueprints, plugin files, etc.)
File Size Limits
For large uploads (such as large world files or big mod packs), we still recommend using FTP. The File Manager is excellent for quick edits but may be slower with files over several hundred megabytes depending on your connection.
Tips and Recommendations
Restart your server after making config changes.
Keep backups of important files before editing.
Double-check you are editing the correct folder for your game.
Use FTP for large transfers and the File Manager for quick edits.
